Shrine Shines, so will Raj Sherman

So yesterday we enjoyed the Shrine Circus at Rexall. A good cause and a great old-fashioned family event.

I always have mixed feelings on using animals for entertainment purposes, but all the beasts seemed very well cared for, and the gentle routines were no big deal.

There was the typical circus line-up: a lion, an elephant, and chimps; but even camels, a panther and a buffalo.  Of course there was the impressive juggling and balancing acts, and then there were the less routine events, such as the fancy, yet slightly cheesy motor-bike high-wire trapeze act, and the crowd favourite - ”ride two motor-bikes at high speed in a giant metal ball” act, which was truly impressive, and needless to say, a tad dangerous.

During the show I couldn’t help but think of those impacted by the Tsunami. You almost feel guilty sitting munching on pop-corn watching a circus while you know others are searching for loved ones. And how about the gentleman who was found floating on his roof, ten miles out in the ocean two full days after the quake. Amazing mixture of horrible luck and good fortune to be found alive floating ontop of a few inches of wood.

We may curse our long winters and seek refuge in large indoor (and sometimes soulless) events, but at least through the good fortunes of geography we don’t risk being ravaged by earthquakes, tidal waves, or most other natural disasters.

On another note: tonight is another Alberta Party event that will rightly capture a fair bit of attention The timing is great considering the recent revelations of pay-outs and both apparent and obvious mismanagement in our health system. Sherman will be joined by head of college of Physicians and Surgeons, Louis Fancescutti
