Sandwich Artists

Here’s a shot of the boys partaking is a neighbourhood effort to make sandwiches for shut-in seniors. Great community spirit here in the Glebe.

Friday Night 67s – (Minor) Hockey Night in Ottawa

Below are some quick sights and sounds from the local rink again – including Fin, Alistair and their cousin Mathew at last night’s Ottawa 67′s game against the Peterborough Petes.

It was a great game. The home team lost a nail-biter but the kids enjoyed themselves. For me I was once again awed by the skill level of these young men. You get a greater appreciation sitting so close. It was also neat to watch the 67s goalie, knowing that he was the star of the Czech team at the world junior tournament in Alberta over the Christmas holiday. He had a solid game last night but his defense let him down a little.

Because it was Minor Hockey Night there were tons of families with their little tykes. The atmosphere was pretty fun. I’ll spare any viewers the footage of the spirited hockey fight that occurred, to my wife’s horror, right in front of our seats; as well as the sight of several 8 year old boys going topless and spinning their shirts above their heads, which was actually quite funny to watch although I was secretly happy neither of our boys got in on the action. (I am of the opinion that clothes should generally stay on while out in public, yet I must confess that years ago while watching the Edmonton Oilers play the Montreal Canadians in the heritage classic outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium (while it was minus 25) I found it very funny to see a streaker run around dodging security guards while wearing only a toque and (oddly) one sock, as I recall.

Anyway, the clip below is a relatively quiet moment in the game, believe it or not. We were surrounded by scores of young boys hopped up on liquid sugar and tartrazine, including some who brought along their long and loud “sport-horns”, or whatever you call those things (vuvuzuelas?).

It is nice being able to walk to the rink inside of 5 mins, especially when it is so cold all of a sudden (it is about minus 20 today but it feels colder). As noted the other day though,  we are welcoming the cold weather since it means that the Canal will open right away. Having said that, I just remembered that I am on “shovel duty” as a volunteer at our local outdoor rink tomorrow night. Hmmm…time for the long undies.

Bye-Bye Bicyclette

I am no longer angry, but a couple of days ago I was furious. In the heat of the moment I wrote a rather inelegant Facebook status-update that included the f-bomb, and a threat to the person who had stolen my bike. You see I left it unlocked because my son had split his lip open and I had scooped him up to rush him home.

I was a little mad at myself for not remembering to rush down soon after to lock up my bike, surely I should have, but I was more upset with the type of person who would steal a bike, in my case this was the third time to experience the frustration.

The first time (about 10 years ago) someone used a massive bolt cutter and lopped off a thick cable-lock (which I learned to never use again), the second time someone wandered into our garage in Edmonton and stole my bike that was attached to a child-carrier (come to think of it, I recall that I also wrote an inelegant Facebook update that time as well).

This time it seemed extra shitty due to the circumstances – my son had an odd little accident on the school bus, he was leaning forward at the same time the bus made a sudden stop and he banged his mouth on a metal bar, in so doing his tooth actually broke through just below his bottom lip. I arrived at home just as the bus arrived and saw that he was crying and bleeding from his mouth. He was extremely upset and was almost in shock as he started to shake from the pain (as I understand, it had just happened).  We ran inside and quickly administered ice, soon followed by ice-cream. After determining that he had, thankfully, not-broken any teeth and did not need stitches we popped in a movie and I snuggled-up on the couch to help him feel better. Within in a short-while he was as good as new.

I understand that people can be desperate enough to want to steal. Unfortunately there are many people who struggle in life and their circumstances are challenging, but for crying out loud – steal cars, not bikes! (joking, sorta’)

At any rate, another bike is down the tubes. Looks like I’ll be using my wife’s bike to commute to work, which is ok because she doesn’t use it and her bike is much “better” than mine (technically it is vastly superior).

But I had actually grown to love my quirky little three-speed city-bike that was as old as I am. I really hope it turns up, although I doubt it. I called the police and left a message. I was supposed to get a call back to make the report but no luck yet. Anyway, c’est la vie!

Oddly I can’t find a picture of my bike, but you can see it in this short video. If anyone sees a 1970 Old School Ralleigh three-speed cruiser with a funky headlight, please advise, you’ll get ice-cream and snuggles too.

Halloween in the Glebe

Before we moved to Ottawa friends of ours from Edmonton who were living here at the time said that if we come to Ottawa for a year that we should really stay in the neighborhood called the Glebe. We looked into it and, although it was a bit pricier than we wanted, we decided to go for it, mostly on account of the amazing walkability and quick access to most things, including work, and also because we heard about the Glebe’s notorious community spirit.

It hasn’t taken long to get an appreciation for the many very kind people who live in and around this part of the city, including old Ottawa south.

There is a certain mature-hipness to the area that pervades, and there seems to be no shortage of family events to go to, be it a farmers market, street festivals, musical shows, book fairs, or community parties.

Halloween says a lot about a neighborhood and tonight we were blown away by the kind hospitality of our neighbours as they patiently tended to the teeming masses of children on this mild Oct 31st evening.

Below is a short clip from one funky house, the home of “Broccoli Man” (this guy actually gave out broccoli all night) and below that is a few seconds of our boys at the neighborhood Halloween party, where there were a dozen different activities for the kids to have fun with, including bean-bag tossing, bowling, etc. Interestingly, I bumped into a federal cabinet minister at the party and gained a little insight into the busy schedule that they keep and how such intense jobs make it difficult for them to spend much time with their families.

As an aside, I found out today that I have shingles. No, not the kind that come in heavy bundles and are stapled to your roof, but the painful kind that make your skin tingle. I noticed an irritating rash on my back the other day and today it had spread around to the front. I may have caught it time from advancing since I was prescribed an anti-viral. So far the pain has been fairly minor but it is starting to hurt a bit more than before. I think it might be time for some pain-numbing loot from my son’s candy bag!

Oh, Happy Birthday to my grandma!
